The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
